Sacromonte Landscape Hotel & Winery

Leonardo Finotti

The South Americans certainly have a way of pushing the boundaries of hotel design – as seen at newly-opened Sacromonte Landscape Hotel & Winery in Uruguay, where 13 cabins with mirrored façades are designed to reflect the surrounding grassland and thereby disappear into the rugged landscape. Sitting on top of a nearby hill is Sacromonte’s farm-to-table restaurant.

Kachi Lodge

Amazing Escapes

Hotels don’t come much wilder than Kachi Lodge, a new collection of six domed pods on the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, each with a shower room, woodburning stove and large bed, positioned to take in the incredible views. In Africa, Namibia’s boom will be consolidated with the opening of Sonop, the second Namibian property from Zannier Hotels, with 10 lavish tents in the Namib desert; nearby, &Beyond will relaunch Sossusvlei Desert Lodge after a total overhaul combining cutting-edge design with eco practices. Rwanda maintains a high profile with the 2019 opening of Kwitonda Lodge from uber-luxurious safari brand Singita, set in prime gorilla-viewing country. In South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Royal Malewane opens The Farmstead – three standalone suites and an exclusive-use villa. In the Cambodian wilderness, Shinta Mani Wild is truly remote – you can even travel by zip-line to its tented riverside setting. For a larger-scale adventure, Emirati style, Jumeirah group opens Al Wathba Desert Resort & Spa in the dunes of Abu Dhabi’s desert. Greenland – one vast wilderness – has Camp Kiattua, glamping at its most extreme with access only via boat or helicopter; and in France Le Refuge de Solaise will be the country’s highest altitude hotel when it opens in Val d’Isère’s upper Solaise cable car station for the 2019/20 ski season.

Belmond Cadogan

Owen Gale

With Knightsbridge one way and Chelsea the other, London locations do not come much better than this. So hello Belmond Cadogan, slap bang in the middle of Sloane Street, overlooking Cadogan Place gardens, to which – extremely unusually – hotel guests will have access. Of the 54 rooms and suites, the best have fireplaces, some have balconies and all are properly sumptuous: downstairs, Russell Sage has worked his design magic on the bar, tea lounge and restaurant. In the latter, young acclaimed British chef Adam Handling (after whom the restaurant is named), will be overseeing the menu.

Can Bordoy

Mallorca’s tiny capital Palma has seen a surge of new boutique hotels; most recent and among the best is Can Bordoy (above), with the largest private garden in the Old Quarter. In Rome, by the Colosseum, Palazzo Manfredi (seventeenth-century origins with modern interiors) has added four iconic new suites; Italian hotel brand JK Place, currently with addresses in Rome, Florence and Capri, jumps ship to France, with a new opening in Paris later in the year. The Hoxton, a rapidly expanding chain for the design-conscious, follows openings in Portland and Williamsburg with a new venture in Chicago’s emerging Fulton Market district (and LA later in the year). Similar in style and outlook, Soho House launched recently in Mumbai, overlooking Juhu Beach (check out its rooftop pool). In Calcutta, another great Indian destination, don’t miss the new Glenburn Penthouse (sister to Glenburn Tea Estate in Darjeeling) with nine elegant suites in the heart of the historic city. Occupying 43 of the 65 storeys in a new tower block on Kowloon’s Victoria Dockside in Hong Kong, Rosewood offers serious design and culinary wow factor. And returning to a London theme, there are two new design-driven kids on the block: The Dixon, in a former police station and magistrates court by Tower Bridge (London’s fastest up-and-coming cultural and creative hotspot); and eco-conscious Vintry & Mercer, in the heart of the City among the livery halls and guilds of London’s mercantile past – hence its name.

To Europe where, in Portugal, Quinta da Comporta is a new sustainable hotel project set among pine trees and rice fields a short drive from the beach. In Menorca, the gang behind super-cool Experimental Cocktail Club (which has now branched out from bars into hotels) opens a new property with 40 acres and 40 rooms, designed with Dorothée Meilichzon. There’s an interesting project in Croatia, too, where luxury, low-impact eco-resort Tesla’s Nest (named after Nikola Tesla, born nearby) will have wooden and canvas houses around a lake, plus Tesla cars to rent. Master of hospitality Gordon Campbell Gray has recently opened The Machrie on the Inner Hebridean island of Islay in Scotland (think ocean views, golf and whisky) while, further south, Grantley Hall is set to become North Yorkshire’s grandest hotel and spa when it opens shortly.
