Scientists tend to scoff at the idea of crystals having any mystical properties, but crystals have been used all over the world for thousands of years, for adornment, healing and protection. Recently even my non-mystic friends have started buying decorative chunks of amethyst and rock-crystal lights. I’ve also been hearing lots of dinner party chat about how powerful they are, but until recently, I was sceptical. Though I am a healer, and I love the way they look, I’ve never been convinced that crystals could change the feeling, as well as the look of a room. Then by chance, I visited three very different houses where the atmosphere was unusually light and clear. Each owner insisted that the secret was crystals, and mentioned the same name, Susan Dabbs. They said that, like an acupuncturist, she had placed crystals in strategic points, to help the energy flow. They said that she had never advertised, and that she was often secretly flown across the world by decorators and clients, to heal properties. That I would be lucky to find a space in her diary. To my surprise, Sue agreed to give me her first interview in thirty years.
When she arrived at my house, the first thing that struck me was how un-new age she was, in a navy blue dress, with a smiley face and very kind eyes. ‘People are often surprised,’ she said, ‘that I’m not in a caftan and beads.’ She laid a selection of crystals out on the dining room table. They looked pretty, but I couldn’t feel any sort of vibe from them. So I wasn’t expecting much to happen in my daughter’s basement bedroom, which has felt dark and frowsty for years. Sue placed a white calcite sphere under the bed, and a pink quartz heart on the table. Suddenly the room felt so different that I actually yelped with surprise. The light seemed brighter, and the air in the room felt cleaner. Sue laughed, took the crystals out into the corridor, and the atmosphere drooped. She brought them back in, placed them precisely, and the room felt wonderful again. I couldn’t have been more astonished.
On a tour of the house, it was obvious that Sue can feel energy, particularly electromagnetic energy. Like a bloodhound, she went straight to the comms cupboard that hides our Sky box, and even sniffed out the Wi-Fi booster lurking behind a curtain in my son’s bedroom. She put clear quartz, selenite and calcite by the machines, and zing! Immediately the atmosphere lightened in both rooms.
I was truly astounded, but Sue explained, ‘It’s not complicated. A home is a container for energy. No matter how big or small it is, it is basically four walls and a lid. It’s just energy, both good and bad. We take this energy in with our breath.’
She added, ‘I’ve also noticed such an increase in electromagnetic energy. In London, when you are sitting in your car, minding your own business, you can pick up 20-30 WiFi’s. We are bombarded, it’s incredible. Our computers and phones need upgrades and reboots to keep up. Our energetic body systems are struggling. I’ve been working very hard to find remedies, and I now know that I can use crystals to reset a property.’
‘A Feng shui practitioner might tell you to move your bedroom, but often that’s not possible in a small flat. The beauty of using crystals, is that you can work with what you’ve got and how you are already living. Lots of my clients (particularly the husbands) don’t even want to see the crystals, but they don’t need to be visible, they can be tucked away and still doing their work.’
Funnily enough, my husband doesn’t want to see crystals all over our house either, but I was so impressed by Sue’s intuition and expertise, that we now have a large number of her crystals, mostly hidden in cupboards and drawers, doing their thing. She sources, energetically cleans and attunes all the crystals herself. Mine are set up in a complete system, a grid, known as a crystal lay. But she’s also widening her business, to bring crystals to more people, including little quartz buttons that you can stick on the back of your mobile phone and little bags of crystals to keep in your pocket at work.
If you don’t need a full five star consultation, Sue’s new website crystalprescriptions.co.uk might be a good place to start. Or try visiting a crystal shop, run by someone else who loves and understands them. Pick some up in your hands and notice what they feel like. Comfortable? Uncomfortable? Zingy? Heavy? Powerful? Sue’s advice is to start with a couple that you like, and slowly build up your collection. If your crystals are working hard for you, she advises you to clean them regularly under running water, with salt, or put them out in the sunlight or moonlight.
Have our house crystals worked? I believe so, partly because I could see and feel such a difference when they were installed. My husband and children say that they can’t tell the difference, but several of my healing clients have noticed, and my saintly ironing lady asked, the day after Sue’s visit, if I had had some of the rooms repainted, because she said that the house looked so shiny.
Sue Dabbs' guide to decorating with crystals
How to counter the effects of electromagnetic energy
‘Try a quartz crystal point (like an obelisk) behind your computer, television or Wi-Fi box.’
How to warm up part of the house you don’t like
‘Adding a nice big chunk of pink quartz crystal is like giving the room a hug. It’s a massive start on building up love and positive vibration.’
How to boost the general energy in an area
‘Amethyst is known as a master healer. It’s a very, very positive stone. A cluster bed of crystals can lift a room. If there is a lot of emotion, try an amethyst cave. Like an air conditioning system, it draws in energy, transmutes it and sends it out.’
Crystals for a happy relationship?
‘Tuck two halves of a quartz geode (like two little crystal caves) into the drawers of your bedside cupboards. Two halves make a whole, no matter where they are, they are the perfect fit.’
Good crystals for gardens?
‘Shiva lingams are fascinating stones from a sacred river in India. They are naturally shaped liked rugby balls, come in all sorts of sizes and patterns and feel very grounding.’
A crystal with va-va-voom?
‘I could find you a calcite crystal ball, four foot in diameter. It would look stunning, but you would need to strengthen the floor, and hire a crane to get it in.”
