The House & Garden Top 100 party

Rachel Chudley, winner of the Rising Star award

On a warm spring evening the cream of the British design world descended on a 1940’s Spiegeltent - part of the Underbelly theatre Festival - on London’s South Bank for House & Garden’s summer party. This was to celebrate the publication of the new list of the Top 100 Interior Designers (available in the June issue), and our inaugural interior design and garden awards.

Guests included Rose Uniacke, Emma Burns of Sybil Colefax and John Fowler, Ben Pentreath, Rabih Hage and Paolo Moschino, to name a few, who drank Louis Roederer Champagne, and grapefruit and mint cocktails made with Sapling Vodka, and feasted on crab doughnuts and radishes with whipped marmite butter. Cabaret performer Bernie Dieter, who would have normally been on stage as part of the Little Death Club, provided a raucous - and slightly unexpected - warm up before the presentation of the awards.

The award for Designer of the Year was given to Maria Speake of Retrouvius who, alongside her husband Adam Hill, has done so much good bringing the value of reclaimed materials to prominence. In her acceptance speech she reminded the gathered crowd of decorators that ‘in the future what we’re putting in will be coming out as fashions change.' With a call to use good quality materials that can outlive the work.

Eighteenth-century Pitshill in West Sussex, won the magazine’s Project of the Year award (sponsored by Element 7) for the painstaking restoration work carried out by an impressive team of creatives overseen by Edward Bulmer.

Garden Designer of the Year (sponsored by Westbury Garden Rooms) was awarded to the brilliant Dan Pearson, and Russell Sage received the Pineapple Award for Hotel Design (sponsored by Avis) for his work on Hauser & Wirth’s new venture The Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland.

The list and the party felt more vibrant than ever, thanks to an influx of brilliant young British design talent led by last year’s Designer of the Year Beata Heuman, and Rachel Chudley (a Top 100 newcomer with a project in the June issue of the magazine) who won the inaugural House & Garden Rising Star award, cheered from the sidelines by her friends, the artist and designer Luke Edward Hall and his partner Duncan Campbell of Campbell-Ray.
